A doctor has said it was “unusual” for the drug to be sold in the first place as it could have a similar effect on patients with erectile dysfunction (ED).
Dr Chris Dyer, head of sexual medicine at University College London, said: “It is unusual but it is probably the most common product available today.”
The drug, marketed as Viagra for men aged 18 and over, was first introduced in the UK in September 1998. It is available in a 50mg dose.
The drug, which is called sildenafil, is prescribed to men with erectile dysfunction to treat high blood pressure and heart problems. It should be taken only when required. Erectile dysfunction is the inability to sustain a penile erection, which means a man cannot obtain and maintain an erection during sexual intercourse.
Sildenafil, which is sold as the brand name Viagra, is a prescription drug. It is an oral treatment for erectile dysfunction.
But some patients with impotence have complained that they may have difficulties with erection.
Dr Dyer said: “The drug could affect patients’ sexual ability, so that when the doctor prescribes this drug he may be able to alter the results of the drug or increase the frequency of doses.
“It is also unusual, but it is likely that the drug is being taken for a more serious condition.
“The impact of the drug is likely to be greater in older people.
“It is not known how often the patient will take the drug, and it is not known if the patient will have problems with erectile function in older people.
“It is important to remember that there may be a greater impact on the quality of life of the patient, and that the drug could be used as a form of treatment for the underlying condition.
“The effects of the drug are likely to be greater in people of younger ages, so that when the doctor prescribes it he may be able to alter the results of the drug or increase the frequency of doses.”
The drug has been approved by the MHRA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
It is also being used by pharmacists to make sure that all patients have access to the medication, which can cost over £15,000 a month.

“Our product is not for use in women, and we are having problems in the bedroom with a prescription for it.
“The prescription is from a UK regulated doctor and is for men 18 years and over.
“If you or a family member has been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction and you want to buy Viagra, contact your GP.
“Your medicine will be sent to your local pharmacy.
“If this is not working, or if your blood pressure is not getting better, you will need a different medicine, as the drug is being used for a more serious condition.
“If you have been prescribed sildenafil, your GP may also be able to write you a prescription for your next dose.
